Laptop Computing and Mobile Broadband

By Allyson Westcot

When you take your personal computer on the go as you travel, either locally or over the road, all you need to do is find a spot with Wi-Fi access to get online using that wireless Web connection. But what about when there is no easily accessible, free Wi-Fi hotspot nearby? Without mobile broadband, someone that uses a PC heavily while working in the field would have to find hotspots or travel back to the office for access.

If you use a cell phone, you already know the benefit of having the ability to access that service almost wherever you go. Coverage has seriously improved during the last decade, so that most users will never be without service except maybe in the most isolated areas. And users can often get online if they have data plans, thanks to mobile broadband service. The same principle applies for portables like the Panasonic CF52 that have mobile broadband. There's no real need to find Wi-Fi hotspots, since the computer is always hooked up to a broadband provider, just like a cellphone generally will be.

This allows for more productiveness, because there aren't any pauses or complete stops to find access, and can help in numerous cases where a sales rep, for example, needs to look up information to provide a quote, or a service person needs info for a good job estimate. Without mobile broadband, that might have to wait, which may cause a loss of business.

Wireless carriers typically have special plans specifically for mobile computing, so you can take advantage of the always-on network. This could be something that is crucial for medical personnel and emergency response teams, folks who travel such as sailors, those who could be in more out-of-the-way areas and could need help, and anyone that doesn't wish to have to stop and find access to get connected.

For the complete protection for a laptop computer, embedded wireless broadband is good, because it's built in and protected from spills, bumps and other extremes right along with the rugged system.
