Confident Body Language

By Sophia Marshall

People constantly send nonverbal messages. Without saying a word they can show that they are upset, attracted, confused, and even confident. Little signals like our posture, our eye contact, and our expressions are always sending messages about the way we feel and what we think.

One strong signal of what you're thinking or feeling is your eye contact. Your eyes are constantly informing people about your thoughts. Eye contact can say that you're attracted, interested, or confident. Use it appropriately to make stronger connections with the people you interact with. Fail to use eye contact and you could send the message that you are not interested or don't respect the people you interact with.

Fight the urge to look at the ground. Keep your eyes up even when you're not talking to anyone. When you look at the ground it makes you seem both closed off and like you lack confidence. This can be a tough habit to break but one that will make you seem more confident and open to interaction.

Always have a strong handshake. This is an obvious signal of how you feel about yourself and is often a first impression that you make on people. Make it good. Also keep your hands out of your pockets. Hiding your hands or needing to hold onto something makes you look insecure. Demonstrate what you're saying with appropriate hand gestures instead. Don't Cross Your Arms. This makes you seem closed off to the people around you and nervous. Keep an open posture and you'll seem warmer and more self confident.

Your walk says something about you as well. It's perfectly fine to walk quickly or slowly. No matter your pace, you should take long, strong strides. Don't shuffle around. Also let your arms swing naturally by your side. Restricting or exaggerating your arm movements makes you look less than confident.

Don't have a frantic walk. It is fine to walk fast but walking around like there's a fire behind you makes you look flustered and out of control. On your craziest days, try to calm your walk down a little to appear more calm and confident in yourself and your abilities.

Your posture is an immediate signal about how you feel about yourself so stand tall! This is an obvious sign of confidence and super important to communicating how you feel about yourself. No matter what you're doing, your back should be straight and your shoulders should be back.

Be Visible. When speaking to someone, don't hide behind chairs, tables, or bars. Show yourself off! Practice this in moderation. You will, of course, sit on the other side of the table from your date and on the opposite side of the bar from the bartender. But when it's appropriate, remove barriers between you and the people you're talking to and make yourself more visible.
