GPS Technology Has Grown Leaps And Bounds

By David Bouman

GPS or Global Positioning Systems has made our lives much easier. Reading maps and stopping for directions has become a thing of the past now that GPS has made our lives more convenient.

GPS has been around for a few years and with all of the improvements and "bells and whistles" now available, sometimes it is hard to decide which system is right for you. If you are planning to buy a new GPS take a look at the next few paragraphs for some information that can help you make an informed decision.

Choose a device that has an easy to read screen, and a clear voice system. While you are driving on busy roads, a clear and precise voice function will prevent you from having to avert your eyes from traffic, while a larger screen will make it easier for you to see the direction you are heading, on the map displayed.

While some GPS have voice command functions, they are not always 100% reliable or accurate, so before making your purchase, test the screen options in the store first, and choose the device that has the easiest to read display, as well as larger sized buttons that will make it easier to navigate while you are driving.

If you are buying one, you can purchase a kind that stays permanently on your dashboard or one that you detach and can take with you wherever you travel. The benefit to the former is that you will not have to hassle with taking it out every time you get in the car because it will just be where you want it to be.

It is often a good idea to choose the mobile variety of GPS if you have more than one vehicle for which you intend to use it, plus it can be taken with you whilst hiking or jogging. Make sure to check the size of the mobile device prior to purchasing, however, because it will need to fit into your hand, or whichever pocket or bag that you take with you.

If you want to use your GPS as a reference for certain places, such as gas stations, cafes and restaurants, rest areas, etc, then a device which has a 'point-of-interest' database would be a good choice, as not only will it provide the address and telephone number of an establishment, but many GPS devices will give information on the place you are inquiring about, as well as estimated travel time to get there.

The last tip is that it is worthwhile to get a GPS that updates frequently. Most internet connected versions have this feature. It is important because roads and locations are constantly changing and your information can be outdated and less useful if updates are not performed regularly. Some GPS units even have real time traffic information and construction information so that you can avoid hassles like detours, back ups and long delays.
